FAQS

Is the climb to the peak extremely difficult? Do I need to be highly fit?

While you don’t need to be an athlete, the hike involves nearly 500 steep and uneven stone steps, which requires a moderate level of fitness. The key is pacing yourself. We always encourage our guests to take it slow, rest at the shaded spots along the way, and stay hydrated. Remember, it is completely fine if you don’t reach the very top – the panoramic views from the halfway point are still absolutely breathtaking.

What kind of shoes should I wear? Are sandals or flip-flops okay?

Please leave the flip-flops at your hotel. The limestone steps can be jagged and become very slippery, especially with morning dew or after a light rain. We strictly advise wearing sturdy walking shoes or sneakers with good grip. When conquering the Dragon Mountain, your safety and stability must always come before fashion.

I heard the path splits into two different peaks halfway up. Which one should I choose?

That is correct. About halfway up, the trail divides. The path to the right leads to a smaller, quieter peak with the Buddhist Stupa. The path to the left takes you to the iconic Lying Dragon (Ngoa Long) peak – this is the highest point that offers the famous 360-degree view of the Tam Coc river winding through the rice fields. We usually recommend tackling the left path (the Dragon peak) first while your energy levels are highest!

When is the absolute best time of day to do the hike for the best experience?

Timing is everything at Mua Cave. To avoid the intense midday sun and the massive crowds of day-trippers, we highly recommend hiking either right when the gates open (around 6:00 AM) or waiting until late afternoon for the sunset (around 4:30 PM). Our itineraries are strictly built around these golden hours to ensure you hike safely, breathe the fresh air, and capture the most stunning light for your photography.
